The two choirs have sung together in concert a few times over the years. On this occasion the Swansea Excelsior Ladies Choir were celebrating their 85th anniversary and the Gwalia Singers their 60th anniversary at St. Catherine’s Church in Gorseinon
The Excelsior Ladies started the first half with a delightful selection: ’Why We Sing’, ’Calon Lân’, ’Adiemus’, and ‘This Moment In Time’, accompanied by Cerys Wendon and conducted by their Musical Director, Lynda Richards. The audience were enthralled!
Dan Davies, the Gwalia Singers very talented soloist, followed with his musical theatre presentation of ‘Love Never Dies’, he received rousing applause! The Excelsior’s Stephanie Gardner then sang a solo from ’Phantom Of The Opera’. It was an amazing performance, highly applauded!
The Gwalia Singers finished the first half with their chosen selection: ‘There Is A Land’, ’Y Darlun’, ’Always On My Mind’ and ’And Can It Be’ with accompanist Rhian Liles on the keyboard, and conducted by their Musical Director, Matthew Sims. They were again, remarkable and much-appreciated performances.
The interval provided an opportunity for refreshments and a raffle.
In the second half, Excelsior Ladies performed another great selection from their repertoire – ‘California Dreamin’, some ‘Les Miserables’, ‘The Prayer’ and a truly beautiful duet ‘One Moment In Time’ from Bethan Osmundsen and Stephanie Gardner. All delightful!
The Gwalia Singers then performed four more favourites – ‘What Would I Do Without My Music’, ’Fix You’, ’Will Ye Go Lassie Go’ and ‘Rhys’ – arranged by Deputy Music Director Nick Rogers. Again, beautiful renditions!
The evening concluded with the combined Choirs singing ‘Benedictus’ and ‘Gwahoddiad’ and finally ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’. What a finale indeed! A wonderful musical evening! Sincere thanks to those who organised the concert, the Excelsior Ladies Choir, the Gwalia Singers, the amazing soloists, accompanists and Musical Directors!
