Haydn Lewis has been a dedicated member of the Gwalia Singers for over 20 years. He is bit of a character and is known as the ‘Sweets Man’ as he’s always handing out sweets to choir members to keep their voices and throats lubricated and in tip top condition for singing at their best. Haydn will burst into song at a moment’s notice especially in his vegetable garden when practicing a new song. They say singing to plants makes them grow better!
Haydn is not one to blow his own trumpet or be in the lime light so you probably don’t know of some of his other achievements.
In his younger days Haydn was awarded the Royal Humane Society Award, by the Lord Mayor of Swansea, for saving a woman from drowning at sea in atrocious winter weather conditions off the sea front of Norton.
In 2011 he was awarded the Football Association of Wales Lifetime Achievement Award. It was presented at Cardiff Castle, for his voluntary dedication to Mumbles Rangers Football Club for coaching children ages from 5-16 for over 42 years as well as numerous other awards in this service to football.
The icing on the cake came when he was privileged to receive an invitation from King Charles to attend his garden tea party at Buckingham Palace on 6th May 2026 (worth missing a choir practice for!) Several Royals were in attendance; King Charles, Queen Camila, Princess Ann, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie. A memorable day was had recognising his dedicated volunteering to Mumbles Rangers for over 42 years.
Well done Haydn, well deserved.
