Our Choristers & Choir Sections
Meet the Men Who Are the Gwalia Singers
Our unique sound is built from four distinct vocal sections, from the soaring heights of the First Tenors to the rich foundation of the Second Basses. Each section plays a crucial role, but it’s the men within them who are the true heart and soul of our choir. New members join the choir as probationers and sit with an experienced singer for several weeks before becoming full choristers – join us. Below, you can meet the dedicated choristers who make up the Gwalia Singers.

He continued to develop his knowledge of Musical theatre, performing locally in community centres and churches while furthermore undertaking workshops at the Swansea Grand theatre. He also began independent singing lessons specializing in Musical Theatre With Penny Ryan and Lisa Mears. Daniel joined the choir in 2023 as a Top Tenor and has loved performing as a soloist on multiple occasions for the Gwalia Singers. He has been on all our recent trips to Greece, Ireland and Sardinia and hopes to continue his dedicated service to all his fellow choilsters and the audiences for many years to come.

Choir Part: First Tenor
Hello, my name is Richard and I have been a member of the Gwalia Singers for nearly two years. I am from Pontyates but went to the Cathedral School in Hereford and then to Cardiff College of Education where I qualified as a history teacher in 1971.
I taught in Cwmtawe Comprehensive School for 33 years until my retirement. I also did supply teaching for 10 years. I have a strong singing musical background. From 1960-4, I was a chorister in Hereford Cathedral Choir. I also sang in the Mikado and the Beggars Opera whilst in College. My love of singing made me join Dyffryn Tywi Male Voice Choir and after they folded, I joined Pontarddulais Male Voice, where I still sing, and also now the Gwalia Singers.
I am married to Gaynor, my wife of 40 years. We have two children and three grandsons. During my time in the other two choirs, I have done concerts in Ireland, the Isle of Wight, Huddersfield, London, Cardiff, and many more. I love singing top tenor. The camaraderie and friendship that exists in all choirs is very important to me. The Gwalia is a typical example of this. I would recommend joining a choir like ours to anyone if they like singing and good company.
“Singing”, it is said,” is a good way of prolonging your life.

My name is David and I have been a member of Gwalia singers since October of 2021 just after lockdown was lifted.
I am from Gendros, Swansea. I am married to Karen with three adult children. I have two grandchildren.
I work for Swansea council as a Senior Building Control Surveyor.
It’s always been an ambition of mine to join a choir. Before joining the choir I had never sung in any capacity except in the school choir.
I enjoy it as everyone is so welcoming and together we make a wonderful sound. The process of learning new songs and performing in concerts and weddings is rewarding and gives me a good buzz.

I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys music and singing to come along on practice nights to witness the friendship and camaraderie within the choir.

Choir Part: Baritone
Additional Role(s): Assistant Stage Manager, Section Steward - Baritones
My name is Craig and I have been in the Choir for 12 years, I am married to my beautiful wife Christine, and have two sons Callum & Jenson.
I first saw the choir at a friend’s wedding and was completely blown away by the performance they put on. After talking to a chorister he said why don’t you come along to practice and give it a go, I told him as so many others have said before me that I can’t sing, he replied anyone can sing just give it a go.
Well I can just say now that going along to that first practice session was a very nerve racking experience, but the way I was received on that first night was very special indeed, I was instantly treated as a part of the family and I was absolutely buzzing,
In my twelve year service I have met some amazing people and have made life long friendships, I have been to Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Barbados and this year looking forward to another great trip to Greece.
If you’re looking for friendship and a good craic then look no further than the Gwalia Singers Swansea. I’m so happy that I took it upon myself to become a member of this amazing Choir, it certainly is a life changing experience.

Choir Part: Baritone
My name’s Geoff and I’ve been with the Choir for 7 years. In a former life I was a bank manager – when the banks were good guys, (I insist!)
My wife, Mary, and I have been to the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Barbados with the Choir and are looking forward to our next trip (to Greece.)
Being in the Choir reminds me in many ways of my long-ago rugby experience – being part of a team with a common purpose, some
hard work, a lot of fun, the support for each other and all the winding up you would expect with a bunch of blokes!
I don’t speak Welsh, can’t read music and could never sing a solo. But I have enjoyed it all so much! In fact, like I’ve heard lots of people say, “I wish I’d joined the Choir a long time before I did!”

I’m married to Delyth who’s also a member of a Choir We both joined our choirs in September 2021, and fully appreciate the joy of singing and socializing.
The travelling overseas is also appealing – I wonder where I’ll get to go? My first trip is Greece.
As a newcomer I realise that I should have joined years ago, I highly recommend it!

I am Adrian, a retired teacher who moved to Wales in 1979 with my wife. I taught for 23 years at Olchfa school. We have two children and three grandchildren.
In May 2010 a chorister sold me tickets for the Gwalia Singers Annual Concert, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I decided that I would like to join the choir and became a full member of the choir the following November.
I thoroughly enjoy singing, and get a buzz from performing well in concerts, weddings etc. I have made many friends from the choir who are always supportive if I need help. We do not take ourselves too seriously and there is always a lot of fun to be had.
In my nearly 15 years with the choir I have visited many European countries and also Barbados, where we took part in their Celtic festival.
I would recommend anyone to join the choir, just come along and give it a try, you will get lots of help and support. Singing with the Gwalia Singers is something special.

I am from Ebbw Vale, married with two adult daughters who have “Fled the nest.” My first experience of singing was with Ebbw Vale Male Voice Choir for two years before we then relocated to Swansea in February 2025. Those two years made me determined to continue so i reached out to Gwalia Singers who were very welcoming. Gwalia Singers are very well organised with practice, concerts, music files, social activities, tours, website and Facebook. For many years i thought about joining a Choir but only took the step when i knew Ebbw Vale were encouraging membership, my only regret is not doing this earlier in life. I would encourage anyone who is also thinking of trying a choir to just reach out to Gwalia Singers and give it a go. Wife Wendy also active with the ladies section so meeting others and forging friendships.
My other interests are travel, cycling, walking, gym, real ale, and i volunteer with “Friends of Oystermouth Castle.”

Additional Role(s): Music Team, Stage Manager
Nick was born and educated in Pembroke. He started singing as a boy in St. Mary’s Church choir and later took over as conductor. He also sang with the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir and The Griffon Singers
In 1978 he moved to Llandrindod Wells and joined the Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir, taking over as conductor in 1982. He remained as conductor until he moved to Swansea in 1995, when he joined the Gwalia Singers. Nick was appointed Deputy Musical Director a few years later and took an active part in rehearsals and concerts until he was appointed as Musical Director in 2006. It was almost a baptism of fire as in January 2007 the choir represented Swansea in Mannheim, Germany, for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the twinning of the towns. However, the standing ovation received following the performance on the Saturday evening showed that the choir have made an excellent appointment.
Nick has no musical qualifications, but has a great feeling and enthusiasm for music, which when delivered with his sense of humour and hard work makes rehearsals enjoyable and ensures performances of a high standard. The choir has also increased in numbers, which was one of Nick’s main priorities when he took over as MD.
Nick is a keen sportsman having played cricket for Ffynone in the South Wales Association and also for the Badgers Cricket Club, with whom he still plays. He is a supporter of Swansea RFC and the Ospreys and has started playing golf again since taking early retirement from Lloyds TSB with whom he worked for 32 years. He then worked part time, as an administration officer, in several nursing homes before becomming fully retired.
Nick stood down as MD in 1921 but still sings with the choir basses and is always available to stand in to take rehearsals and performances when the current MD is not available.

Richard
Choir Part: Second Bass
My name is Richard, I am originally from a small village near Watford, just North of London. I am divorced but have two sons and four grandchildren
My work in Catering & Hospitality kept me from regular evening events and I only started singing once I retired.
I joined the Gwalia Singers nearly seven years ago after being impressed by the type of music they sing and their enthusiastic ‘afterglows’. I still enjoy the ‘lighter’ choice of music as opposed to the more formal, heavy, traditional Male Choir choices. I have been lucky enough to enjoy domestic and foreign tours, including Holland and Barbados and I am eagerly awaiting our coming tour to Greece.
I came to choral singing late in life but wish that I had started earlier, there is a great buzz of friendship and support, with newcomers being welcomed and helped regardless of their experience (or lack of) in singing. The benefits of singing on the mind and body are well documented and I would recommend joining a choir for anyone.

My name is Tony and I have been a member of the Gwalia Singers for 12 years. I was a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education prior to retiring.
I was recruited by an existing choir member and enjoy being in the choir for the camaraderie, amazing humour and the afterglow where we have a few drinks and usually entertain the people in the pub by singing.
Also, the Choir usually goes on tour annually, I have been fortunate to tour with the Gwalia Singers visiting Netherlands, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Barbados.
It is a commitment to join the Gwalia Singers, however, it is especially rewarding and enriching, where you will make friends and meet people from all walks of life.
